Musi river is located in South Sumatera province and it constitutes as the longest river in Sumatera. Musi river cleaves Palembang city into two parts, they are Seberang Ilir and Seberang Ulu regions. Musi river is also called ‘Batanghari Sembilan’ which means nine big rivers: Musi river and eight big rivers which disembogue in the Musi river. So, Musi river is the biggest river in South Sumatera. Musi river is very unique, because it has many background of historical value from Sriwijaya Kingdom and becomes witness of Sriwijaya Kingdom glory. Musi river becomes center of life in the past, because its very big role. Until now, Musi river has been Palembang people’s pride and it brings a big advantages to Palembang people, especially those who live in the edge of Musi river. Musi river, which is the icon of Palembang city, does not only give many advantages as transportation needs and life source, but also as tour destination.
Musi river has an important role as a way of transportation which is used by all people widely, especially who live in across of Musi river. In the past, Musi river was very needed as the way of transportation from one people to others. Because at that time the distance which became a separation between one settlement and other settlements, therefore the river became as a place of transportation. From that thing, people can make an interaction each other. Now, the function of the way of transportation is also used as a voyage, and more, by existing of harbour, voyage activity can be enjoyed by the people. Except that, Musi river is also used as the way of transportation for distributing things from the market to hinterland where all the people use river transportation in order to be able to fill the necessary which is got from the market. In other side, people who has farming field and garden field which are near by edge of Musi river use the river as the way of transportation to sail their earth source result. Now, Musi river is also used by province government of South Sumatera as the way of transportation of coal.
To some people who live in the edge of river, Musi river is certainly as center of life, because it brings many advantages as a life source for them from the past until now. Till, everything is in the Musi river is very needed for them, such as fish. This river is used by them to get the fish as their needs. They get the fish generally by catching with net and make a fishpond preservation. The kind of fish which the people get, they use it to fill a life necessary by consuming it or selling it in the market. From that selling they get an income which can be used to fill their life necessary. Musi river is also used to take a bath, take a damp, and wash. Because they live with very simple condition, so that the river constitutes the most practical place as a place of filling life activity. Besides that, the water is also used for drinking and the most important it is used to be irrigation in their fields. Generally, their fields are in the edge of Musi river which they settle, so it can do the irrigation process easily. Therefore, the people can work more efficiently and increase their source fields productivity.
Now, Musi river which has given its role to some people, especially some people who live in the edge of Musi river, in fact it can be also used by all people as tour destination. There has some interesting objects which become Musi river tour which can be enjoyed whenever by everyone. They are, the first, every tourist can see raft houses which stay in row in the edge of Musi river. The raft houses are the houses which float on Musi river. The raft houses are the oldest houses in Palembang city and perhaps they were there in Sriwijaya kingdom. The raft houses existance is are very important to keep the history of Musi. The second, every tourist can see float restaurant in the edge of Musi river. It is said as float restaurant because it is located on the Musi river. Tourist can stay and taste the special various Palembang foods. The third, tourist can enjoy the beauty of Ampera bridge which spreads on Musi river and which connects two regions which are separated by Musi river. When night comes, it is the prime time to enjoy its beauty, because it appears the beauty of Ampera bridge which has a sunset background is seen in the east side of Ampera. And the last, it is also important to stay in Kemaro island which is located in the middle of Musi river. The tourist can see the pagoda in that island.
Based on statement above, it can be understood that Musi river from the past until now has contributed in giving advantages to many people as the way of transportation and life source. Musi river also can be managed as river tour which can fascinate every tourist to visit Musi river and make it as an asset of Palembang, South Sumatera which has been kept and developed continuously. An uncounted value from what has been used from Musi river presence, remembers Musi river has hold a very important life role.
